DoD Stockpiles COVID-19 Supplies in Anticipation of Second Wave

The U.S. Department of Defense has a four-month supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) in preparation for an anticipated increase in COVID-19 cases.

The supplies include respirators, gloves and masks for to assist military personnel and their families through the second wave of COVID-19.

These supplies aren't part of the department's pandemic reserves, and were instead procured by the Defense Logistics Agency to help replenish on-hand stock for military services and geographic combatant commands.

A clinical nurse assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego, administers a swab to test a patient for COVID-19.

Much of the supplies will be used for patient care at military treatment facilities and by service members training or deployed worldwide,  Army Col. Matthew Voyles, director of DLA Troop Support's medical supply chain.

"The new reality is that all of our service members have got to have personal protective equipment," Voyles said. "This PPE will be used across the gamut, from individual units at tactical levels to treatment facilities here stateside and at our overseas locations where all service members and beneficiaries receive care."

The Defense Logistics Agency cited a sharp increase in COVD-19 infections since September as the reason for procuring more medical supplies. As of Monday, the Defense Department reported a total of 99,389 infections and 113 deaths among its military and civilian personnel, dependents and contractors.

This isn't the only response the DoD has taken to protect its personnel. last week, it announced a $6.18 million contract award to Illinois-based Medline Industries Inc. to increase domestic production of surgical masks.

Additional protective equipment is being stored at DLA distribution warehouses to fulfill emerging DOD requirements, added Beth McMaster, medical supply chain deputy director.

"None of us truly knows what's coming. We've prepared for the upcoming months and will remain aware of manufacturing disruptions, especially for those items that remain in a fragile support state," she said.

DLA contracting officials continue searching for new vendors that can provide COVID-19 supplies, and many have turned to distributors like AeroBase Medical+ for military medical supplies.

AeroBase Medical+ was founded in May in response to the initial COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. While many traditional medical supplies distributors have struggled to keep up with the high PPE demand, AeroBase Medical+ was more easily able to reach military bases and hospitals because of the established relationships of its parent company, AeroBase Group. The company has already delivered masks, gloves and PPE to hundreds of military and civilian personnel.

Miliary entities and hospitals alike were able to purchase medical supplies directly from their online platform, without waiting for a quote as many traditional distributors require.
